Switched from 1Password to BitWarden

Today I switch from 1Password to BitWarden. Now that I don’t have a personal Mac anymore I wanted a password manager that would work on Linux. BitWarden has desktop clients for Windows, Mac, and Linux. They also have mobile clients for OSX and Android.

Their plugins work on all browsers including Microsft Edge which 1Password has never worked on.

Everything is also open source!

Goodbye EnergySavvy…Hello Oracle!

I was with EnergySavvy for almost four years but in April I decided to leave and pursue an opportunity at Oracle. I am working with a bunch of folks that used to work at Amazon.com around the time I was let go.

At some level it feels like a redemption.

Oracle is doing some really interesting things in the bare metal cloud space. I am working on the IO team and we manage Chef for the rest of the organization.

Due to Chef I am learning Ruby.

Nier Automata

Recently finished my third play through of Nier Automata and I am pretty sure this will be my game of the year. The story is great, the combat fluid and fast, the levels well designed and there are plenty of weapons and upgrades. I played it on a PS4 so I didn’t run into any of the PC port issues. I am also glad I avoided spoilers (other than to play it more than once). There are two main characters: 2B, a female android, and 9S, a male android. You start playing as 2B. On the second play through you get to control 9S and see the game from a different perspective. On the third play through you get an entirely different game all together and a new female android, A2, is introduced. There are 26 possible endings of which five are “real” endings. The other 21 endings basically occur at different points in the game when it expects you to do something but you don’t. I highly recommend this game to anyone.

Dark Souls and Just Cause III

About a year ago I mentioned Dark Souls and Just Cause III. A year later and I still haven’t finished either. I was pretty far into JC3 but lost my save game. There are some missions that are really frustrating because its random if you can do the right thing to pass the mission. Dark Souls is well Dark Souls. I have been watching a lot of LobosJr’s Twitch streams and he makes it look so easy.

Webfaction is hosting my email now

Well, my email on Outlook.com didn’t last long. I wasn’t happy with how the server operated within the Windows 10 Email or Outlook clients (uses a web api and not a true IMAP server). Webfaction, my hosting company for the past five or so years, also handles email but I never used it. I set it all up and moved my wife’s domains over to it as well. They worked with me to upload 10GB of archive mail (since 1999) that my wife collected. I don’t hang on to email that long so I didn’t have a lot to move over.

All of our secondary accounts now forward to one main account on Webfaction. Its nice to actually have a real, authentic, IMAP server and not a Google imitation.

Bought a PS4 and Horizon Zero Dawn and finished it

I finally broke down and bought a PS4 from my friend. He upgraded to the PS4 Pro so I got his used one. I also picked up Horizon Zero Dawn and beat it in about a week and a half. It is a really good game. Like Far Cry 3 or 4 but with a better story. It has good game mechanics and reasonable difficulty curve in that as I got more powerful there was still a challenge. I didn’t 100% clear the game so if they come out with DLC I may revisit it.

Finally gave up on “social media”

A contact from a recruiter on Friday really infuriated me. It was obvious he was doing a generic search on LinkedIn and blasting out an email hoping for a response. I responded and said I would never work with someone who resorted to SPAM. He gave me a pretty lengthly reply about how he was the good guy and a family business and I should be lucky to receive his email. It was then I realized LinkedIn doesn’t do anything for me but fill my inbox with desperate recruiters who don’t give two shits about me and who can’t take the time to actually read my profile before contacting me. LinkedIn has zero motivation to fix this as paying users that send out these messages support the site.

Something in me snapped. I deleted LinkedIn, Facebook, Google+, and Twitter. I can’t think of a single meaningful interaction I ever had on any of them. We’ll see if anyone notices and contacts me. My email address hasn’t changed since the early 90’s and is pretty unique so folks who want to can reach out.

I also switched my personal domain from Google to Outlook.com. I have decided to give Microsoft a try and see how they do. They aren’t perfect but at least what they do is up front and in your face. I have no idea what Google does with my information and frankly I don’t care to give it to them anymore.

Just finished WatchDogs 2

I just finished WatchDogs 2 and had a blast. A great story, fun mechanics, great side missions, excellent characters and voice acting. If you liked Hackers the movie you will love this game. Its as if the spirit of the movie is in the game.
